Buying a Wall, Table Top or Garden Fountain - What to Look For

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

If you are considering the purchase of a tabletop, wall or garden water fountain you must check that the one you are looking at will be able to fit into the space where it will go and will also look good. Outdoor garden fountains are often very big and expensive and you must make sure you buy one that will enhance your garden and comfortably fit into it’s location. Below are some guidelines that we hope will help you to choose the right fountain for your garden or home, whether it is a wall, table top or outdoor floor fountain so that you can make a wise choice.

Wall Fountains

Wall fountains can be bought in both horizontal and vertical models. These different design will look good in various situations. A large upright fountain would be suitable for a high ceilinged room.  On a wider wall a vertical fountain will probably look out of place unless you hang other features on each side of the fountain. For a room with a long wall and a very low ceiling choose a horizontal wall fountain. In a high ceilinged room a horizontal fountain tends to appear smaller than it in fact is. You need to think about how deep a fountain is. This may be important in a narrow walkway or corridor though most wall fountains are around six inches deep so this shouldn’t be much of a problem.

Measuring a Wall Fountain

Find out the size of the wall fountain you intend to buy then measure it out on the wall where you have chosen to place it. Stick post-it notes or thumb tacks at the corners then stand back a bit to make sure that it appears OK. Some people prefer to use masking tape to make an outline of the fountain for a better idea of what it will look like when hung in place.

Table Top Fountains

Check for the diameter of the fountain you have chosen to buy then confirm it will fit where you intend it to go. It’s helpful to place a similarly sized object at this location to ensure it appears OK. To judge the height you could pile some books to the same height and see if it look OK. Some tabletop fountains can differ in height since they are made from natural stones that, of course, are not all the same. Take care that you make allowances for this when deciding on the fountain to purchase.

Outdoor Garden Fountains

The most important consideration is probably the width when thinking about an outdoor floor fountain. If you are going to place the fountain under an arbor or on a patio or other structure you will have to find out as well the height of the fountain. You could mound boxes in the chosen location to guarantee that is going to fit in comfortably and it will look good.

Water Sources for Fountains

Garden fountains generally use water that is recirculated and which needs to be replaced as it is lost by splashing and evaporation. A water pump is used to circulate the water through the fountain. Most office or residential fountains use a pump like this. A reservoir holds the water and fountains of this type can be sited wherever an electricity source is available. Fountains that recirculate the water need to be monitored carefully and the reservoir topped up or the pump may be damaged

Recirculating Fountains

The frequency with which you should refill the reservoir is dependant on the humidity of the air in the fountains location. A fountain in a heated home in the winter will probably need refilling quite often, preferably with small amounts of water frequently, instead of allowing the reservoir to nearly run dry before you add water. If you have house plants just replenish the reservoir each time you water them.
